Showmax is gearing up to launch its latest original series, “Youngins,” a teen drama from the acclaimed team at Tshedza Pictures, known for their iEmmy-nominated works such as “Outlaws,” “Adulting,” and “The River.” The series is set to make its debut on February 12, 2024, promising to bring a fresh perspective to the teen drama genre.
“Youngins” is set in the fictional Olifantsfontein High, a boarding school that becomes the backdrop for the series’ intriguing narrative. The show features a dynamic main cast including Ayakha Ntunja, Kealeboga Masango, Lebohang Lephatsoana, Toka Mtabane, and Thabiso Ramotshela, who bring to life the complex and vibrant characters of the series.
The series stars Ayakha Ntunja as Amo, a determined new student with clear goals, and Kealeboga Masango as Buhle, the school’s charismatic “it” girl. They are joined by Lebohang Lephatsoana as the flamboyant and social media-obsessed Tumelo, Toka Mtabane as the popular Khaya, and Thabiso Ramotshela as the intellectually driven Mahlatsi Maleka. These five characters form a group navigating the highs and lows of boarding school life, dealing with both teenage challenges and adult-induced drama.
The supporting cast features notable names such as SAFTA winner Loyiso MacDonald and DStv Mzansi Viewers Choice Awards winner Sanna Mchunu, adding depth and experience to the show. MacDonald takes on the role of Principal Mthembu, while Mchunu portrays Matron Lulu.
Phathu Makwarela, Tshedza Pictures’ executive producer, expressed that “Youngins” is a response to the current generation’s need for authentic content that resonates with their experiences. The show aims to reflect the lives of Generation Z viewers, a demographic that is rapidly evolving and defining itself in today’s world.
Director Themba Mfebe, known for his work on “Adulting,” highlighted that “Youngins” is crafted by young writers who embody the authentic experiences of the target audience, offering an unfiltered glimpse into the lives of today’s youth.
“Youngins” is set to premiere on Showmax, with three new episodes streaming every Thursday starting from February 12, 2024. The series is anticipated to be a groundbreaking addition to the teen drama landscape, offering a unique and relatable portrayal of young adult life.
