Rise and Fall: 5 Big Nigerian Record Labels That Fell

The Nigerian music industry is an evolving one. Over the years, we have seen artistes come and go. We have seen labels push them into the limelight. But these days, while some of the artistes are still going strong, the labels are not exactly still visible. We are taking closer looks at some of the labels that have faded out.

5. KnightHouse Records

This label in the height of its powers had artistes like Phenom and Mo’Cheddah who were some of the big names that held the industry down then. Songs like “Ko Maa Roll”, “Best Friend”, “If You Want Me” came from Mo’Cheddah then while Phenom served us some real solid lines too.

In 2012, Mo’Cheddah announced her exit from the label with Phenom leaving too after his contract expired. The label has since not been heard from.

4. Kennis Music

Ah well, it’s tricky writing about the fall of a label that’s still active kinda but we’ll do it anyway. Kennis Music used to boast an array of artistes that included 2baba, Eedris Abdulkareem, Tony Tetuila, Sound Sultan, Fiokee, eLDee, Joe El, Shina Peters, Jaywon, Capital Femi, OJB Jezreel.

Well, what happened to the label? We are asking the same question. The label boasts a few names today but it is not enough to get the label going or make it a real competitor in the industry.

3. Trybe Records

This label used to be home to the likes of 2shotz, Sojay and K9. Run by eLDee, the label was one of the heavy hitters in the early days. After the earlier artistes left, it rebranded by signing names like Eva Alordiah, Sheyman, Sarz and for a while looked like it would thrive but here we are today. What happened?

2. Storm Records

The record had artistes like Sasha, Eldee, GT the Guitarman, Ikechukwu and more but like some of the earlier mentioned names is no longer a heavy hitter. What happened?

The label had an experienced team leading it and was one of those labels we expected to thrive and show the way things are done.

They had Dare Art Alade who released his “Escalade” and “From me 2 U” song there, big hits by the way before leaving to start his own label.

Other artistes with the label then included Sasha, Tosin Martin, Sauce Kid, Naeto C, among others.

1. E.M.E

The label floated by Banky W had some of the in-demand artistes at some point. Artistes like Wizkid, Skales, Shaydee, Niyola, were on point then. But Wizkid left, the label still was active.

Now, the label has since been re-branded into something different and all the artistes under it have left.
