Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation and UMG debut a new musical compilation tagged “Township Grooves”.

Literally everyone in Mzansi misses the late Hugh Masekela so much. The late Mzansi star would have been 81 on the 16th of May 2020. To celebrate the day, the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation and UMG released a new musical compilation of his old songs and tagged it “Township Grooves”.

The newly compiled project was culled from various album released between 1965 and 1974. Zkhiphani reports that the “Township Grooves” project is testament to the notion that “you can take the man out of the Township but you can never take the Township out of the man“.

That was practically his story. The new project’s cover art was designed by world-renowned South African artist, Nelson Makomo. It was inspired by collaborations Demile Feni (Home Is Where The Music Is, 1972), and Milton Glaser (Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz, 1973). Mabusha Masekela, Bra Hugh’s nephew is credited to have put the project together.
