Botswana Court Issues Arrest Warrant For Former President Ian Khama

For a former president, nothing might be as embarrassing as being declared wanted and an arrest warrant issued for them. But that’s the fate Botswana’s former president Ian Khama is contending with right now.

A court in Botswana has issued an arrest warrant for the former president for illegal possession of firearms. According to the court, the former president should be arrested on sight.

The only issue with that judgment at the moment is that Khama is not in Botswana but in neighbouring South Africa, and he can’t just be arrested without the government of both countries reaching an agreement on that.

Amid the call for his arrest, the former president is adamant he is innocent and is just being witch-hunted after he fell out with his successor and the current president of the country, Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Since leaving power, Khama has had about 14 charges hurled his way, including money laundering and handling of stolen property. However, the arrest warrant issued was for the illegal possession of firearms.

Khama not only denied the allegations of arms possession against him, but he also noted that he would welcome an extradition order as it would give him the chance to expose the lies against him in court.

But will that happen?
