Electricity Minister Maintains That The End Of Load Shedding Is ‘Within Reach’

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says the end of Load-shedding is truly within reach.

During his State of the Nation address, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the end of load-shedding was in view. This came a year after he announced the creation of a new Cabinet portfolio for an electricity minister. The president shared that through the National Energy Crisis Committee, the government had made good their commitment to supply more electricity to the national grid.

“Through all these actions, we are confident that the worst is behind us and the end of load shedding is finally within reach. But we are not stopping there to ensure we are not facing a similar crisis ever again,” he said.

Concurring with the president, Daily Maverick reports that the Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told the media that despite the escalated levels of load shedding, the President was not wrong.

He said, “There is nothing new that the President has said.” He revealed that load shedding had decreased over the past few months. According to him, part of Eskom’s summer plan was to carry out planned maintenance during the warmer months when there was lower energy demand.

He said, “But for the remainder of November we have outperformed the curve, which is why the President is saying we have light at the end of the tunnel.”

“We’ve taken a calculated risk, and I have said to the country, in the effort to resolve load shedding, we are not going to cut any corners. There’s a price you pay for ensuring you do things the right way.”
