Ganesha: Mixed Reactions Trail Rihanna’s Topless Photo

Rihanna has been bee described as insensitive after she posted (on Instagram and Twitter) a topless photo of herself wearing a pendant depicting the Hindu god Ganesha.

According to Indian mythology, Ganesha, also spelled ganesh and called Ganapati, is the Indian god of beginnings who is usually worshipped before the inception of any major enterprise. The elephant-headed god is also considered a remover of obstacles, like the rat, also in Indian mythology.

Rihanna shared the topless image two days ago, quoting the Jamaican dancehall star Popcaan, who had sung of a night he didn’t care to wear “lingerie.” At the time of writing this, Rihanna has not taken down the picture. The image, which showed the “Love on the Brain” songstress rocking boxers by her brand, Savage X Fenty, has been liked over 9 million times on Instagram.

While some fans faulted her use of a pendant depicting the god, calling her culturally insensitive, some fans actually sided with her, thinking the image nothing but art. Opinions remain severely divided
