Gwede Mantashe Reacts After Being Booed At COSATU Conference

Clearly, no one would want to be booed. But shi happens, and yes, most times, people at the receiving end react. Gwede Mantashe is one person who would rarely let things slide. At least this much played out recently.

During the recent COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions) congress at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, the ANC chairperson was booed by the delegates and prevented from speaking.

Mantashe was at the conference to deliver the ANC’s message of support. But because he was prevented from speaking, he addressed journalists, noting that he would have to accept that the delegates didn’t want him to speak.

He noted he was leaving and wouldn’t return the following day of the conference. However, for whatever reason, he still showed up at the conference, where he described the delegates who booed him and prevented him from speaking as “immature.”

Still, he maintained that the ruling African National Congress would try to mend things with COSATU.

A key cause of controversy during the convention was former president Jacob Zuma announcing in a statement that he intends to vie for the ANC chairperson position. Reacting to Zuma’s intentions, Mantashe, speaking to journalists, had described it as the biggest joke of the year.
