Hlengwa Responds as Busisiwe Mavuso Storms Out of Scopa Meeting

Eskom board member Busisiwe Mavuso had Mzansi talking yesterday after she walked out of a board meeting with Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa).

According to her, the board and CEO André de Ruyter would not be the “fall guy” for the failure of the ANC-led government in the power sector. She insisted that the government had created the mess that the power behemoth is embroiled in. She claimed that the government had created it, and Eskom had only been brought in to clean it up.

“We are not going to be the fall guy for the R300-and-whatever billion of Medupi and Kusile, that have still not been completed,” she said.

The argument was somewhat heated, with, Mavuso insisting that she was giving the facts and nothing else. In the heat of the debate, she had walked out of the meeting.

Her action threw her name among the trending topics on Mzansi Twitter.

While not denying that ANC has a hand in the whole mess, member of Parliament Mkhuleko Hlengwa noted that Mavuso is a member of the Eskom board and must be held to account for what she’s doing at the institution the ANC had deployed her to.

He added that Scopa made 23 recommendations to Eskom in 2019 regarding the Medupi and Kusile power stations, but Eskom has oh been ae to achieve success in nine of them.
