Mariah Carey Did A Secret Grunge Project In The 90s

R&B and Soul star, Mariah Carey reveals she did a secret grunge project back in the mid 90s.

With how big Mariah Carey is today, there are some things you wouldn’t believe that she would be involved in or even do. We honestly wouldn’t believe that Carey ever contributed to or featured in a alt-rock band’s album. Or even pulled off the look.

However, she’s revealed that that actually happened. Surprised right? Well, we are too. An excerpt taken from her upcoming memoir sees the R&B star revealing that she once channeled singers who were “angry, angsty, and messy with old shoes”. She also revealed that it was for a secret alt-rock project back in 1995.

Apparently, the “Touch My Body” star worked with the band, Chick for their album “Somebody’s Ugly Daughter”. She revealed she wrote, produced and sang background vocals on every song on the album. She went on to state that she would “hum a secret guitar riff” and “they would pick it up and we would record it immediately”.

She also revealed that it was “irreverent, raw and urgent”, and at some point she started to love it. However, the album was not a success when it finally dropped. Mariah’s solo album “Daydream”, which she recorded concurrently became a massive success selling 20m copies worldwide.

I’d bring my little alt-rock song to the band and hum a silly guitar riff. They would pick it up and we would record it immediately. It was irreverent, raw and urgent, and the band got into it. I actually started to love some of the songs. I would fully commit to my character. I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time. You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image. They could be angry, angsty and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips and unruly eyebrows, while every move I made was so calculated and manicured. I wanted to break free, let loose and express my misery – but I also wanted to laugh. I totally looked forward to doing my alter-ego band sessions after Daydream each night.”
