Penny Lebyane Criticised For Comparing Nathi Mthethwa’s Monument Flag To The Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty

Popular broadcaster Penny Lebyane has come under severe flak for supporting the 100-metre flag monument being pushed by South Africa’s Minister of arts and culture Nathi Mthethwa.

She thinks the minister’s proposal is grand and worthy, nothing that he isn’t liked only because the industry hates itself. She ended up asking those criticising the minister how other global landmarks were built. She listed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, and Christ The Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro.

Aware that some people might think that she was paid to post something in support of the embattled minister’s project, she clarified in another tweet that she wasn’t paid anything. She also noted that R22 million doesn’t sound like a lot of money.

Her colleague Robert Marawa countered that the other global monuments she mentioned were not flags and not vanity projects in a struggling economy of mass youth.

Other social media users countered her with similar narratives. You can check them out below.

While Penny claimed that her tweet wasn’t paid, her critics weren’t convinced. They claimed she sorely wanted to take down the post but decided not to because she was paid to put them up. There is no evidence to support this, though.
