Primrose Park Primary School Staff Shot Dead

It was a tragic end of a day for a 61-year-old Primrose Park Primary School teacher as she was shot on her way to school yesterday, Friday, April 9, at 7:15 a.m.

The unnamed woman was driving to the school and was several metres away from it when she was shit and killed along Kunene Road, Primrose Park. The area is notorious for gang violence.

Manenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson Vernon Visage confirmed that gang-related criminal activity is prevalent in the area.

A spokesperson for the police, Captain Frederick van Wyk, confirmed the incident and noted that a murder case had been opened. He described as unclear the circumstances surrounding the murder and the motivation behind it.

Since the incident became front-page news, condolences have been pouring in from across South Africa.

Bronagh Hammond, the spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), shared the department’s condolences with the family and friends of the deceased, as well as the school where she worked until her death.

Authorities and even residents are concerned about what impact the shooting will have on students. As a result, students and even the teachers will be undergoing counselling. Anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to report to the nearest police station.
