SABC2’s Relocation Of Afrikaans Might Damage Ratings & Revenue

SABC2 is being warned that the relocation of Afrikaans content will damage ratings and revenue.

According to reports, the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) shared plans to relocate its Afrikaans content from SABC 2 to the lesser station SABC 3. The announcement has since stirred up so much controversy, with many warning against it.

According to reports, the move also includes the cancellation of the popular current affairs show ‘Fokus.’ Afrikaans hit shows such as ‘Noot vir Not,’ ‘Voetspore,’ and many music shows will be moved to the smaller reaching network SABC3. Some are wondering if the move was strategic to align with the changing demographic and audience preferences or a stab at the Afrikaans’ programming culture.

The SABC has also been warned about these plans. According to most, removing Afrikaans language content from SABC2 will likely not just chase away TV audiences and damage ratings of the already popular shows. It could also alienate South African advertisers.

According to a report by News24, The SABC removing Afrikaans programming from SABC 2 and moving it to SABC 3 “will result in smaller audiences having access to their programmes, and therefore, in all likelihood, they will attract less advertising revenue.” The SABC seems hellbent on going through with it.
