SAPS Arrests Advocate Defending Suspects in Senzo Meyiwa Case

In a move that elicited mixed reactions from South Africans on social media, the tactical response team of the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) arrested Malesela Teffo, the advocate representing 4 of the five accused in the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalie Senzo Meyiwa.

According to reports, he was arrested for failing to appear in court on another case in which he’s facing charges of assault and trespassing.

The men of the tactical response team had stormed the court and arrested Teffo after the court was adjourned. He managed to remove his robes before they handcuffed him.

While he was being ing led away, journalists asked him if he was aware of why he was arrested. He said he didn’t know, except that South Africa’s police minister Bheki Cele wants him to hand off the case.

The minister denied the claim, however, noting he was only just informed about it and ordered an investigation.

Teffo has been in the eye of the public ever since he became an advocate for the suspects in the killing of the goalie. His arrest led to a cry of intimidation among some social media users.

For the Senzo Meyiwa case, the advocate will be in court again next month.
