Students To Retaliate Over NSFAS Mismanagement

Students warn that they will escalate matters over NSFAS mismanagement.

The Higher Education Minister has been warned by the South African Student Organization of a possible escalation if the NSFAS fails to deliver today. According to a report by The South African, today, Monday, 15 January, is the payment date for the next installment of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme disbursement.

The student organizations have warned that if all outstanding payments are not made, they will escalate matters over NSFAS mismanagement. The publication also reports that the Organization For Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) released recordings that implicate NSFAS board chair Ernest Khosa and the Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande in allegations of corruption.

The report further states that millions were made by service providers who allegedly paid kickbacks to the chairperson. At the same time, students were forced to sell their personal belongings to afford to travel home and couldn’t pay for accommodation and food.

Daily Maverick reports that the SA Union of Students (SAUS) calls for Khosa and Nzimande to leave office. The union has also threatened to escalate matters of the students whose payments were mismanaged do not get it today. Nzimande has maintained claims of his innocence, but the DA has laid criminal charges on him.
