Lawyer Confirms Dr Nandipha’s Alleged Assault In Prison

Dr Nandipha’s lawyer has confirmed her alleged assault by two inmates in the prison cell where she is being held.

According to recent reports, Dr Nandipha Magudumana was assaulted by two inmates at the Kroonstad Prison in the Free State over the weekend. The alleged assault was also confirmed by the Department of Correctional Services who said they are investigating it.

Nandipha’s lawyer Advocate Machini Motloung also confirmed the news. He said he received the news on the morning of March 18 when she called him to inform him about it.

Zimoja reports that the disgraced doctor was assaulted by two fellow inmates, a sangoma and a mentally unstable woman in the cells. The assault left her with “serious bruising, pain and suffering”.

According to Motloung, the two women, especially the sangoma, would frequently attack her everytime she sings and pray with the other inmates in the cell.

He said, “This has been coming – she has in the past made another complaint to the internal coordinator. The course of the assault is because of her incessant praying and singing with other inmates.”

He said his biggest concern as her lawyer is the inequality in the centre.

“We will lay a complaint with the Human Rights Commission; her safety is of serious concern as the moment. She continues to be placed in a cell with mentally challenged, drug addicted and physically bedridden inmates.”
