One Year Of Sobriety – Singer Toya Delazy Talks Her Alcohol Addiction & Recovery Journey

Alcoholism is a common problem among South Africans but not everyone would readily admit they have such a problem. Some would rather hide it and pretend all is okay – maybe until they are picked out of the gutter or thrown into rehab by exasperated family members.

Not Toya Delazy.

The songstress, a granddaughter to the late Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, has just admitted to having suffered from alcohol addiction in the past. By her own account, alcohol was her first choice when confronted with serious challenges back then.

She could better face her challenges drunk. But that’s all in the past at this point. Following the death of her grandfather, she had been able to open up about her journey to sobriety. By her account, it’s been a year since she last took alcohol. It’s been a memorable experience with important lessons too.

She also gave insights into how her drinking habit started. She noted that it started later than was the norm – at 17, implying that most South Africans start drinking long before that age. You can check out the lengthy post she made on Instagram below.

Well, for Toya, a new life is only just beginning.
