Senzo Meyiwa’s friend Mthokozisi Thwala is back in the witness box following the rebooting of the trial with a new judge.
The murder trial was plagued with sporadic deferments, with the most recent being when the then-presiding judge Maumela reported ill and made it clear he had no clue when he would be okay again to continue hearing the case. Anyway, President Ramaphosa suspended him, leading to the appointment of a new judge to hear the case.
With the retrial, the accused in the case had the option to reapply for bail and Mthokozisi Thwala has the chance to pop into the witness box again.
Senzo Metiwa was murdered in the Vosloorus family home of his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in 2014 in what was initially claimed to be a robbery. Kelly was present with her sister Zandie and their mother, all of whom have maintained innocence in the murder case.
Mthokozisi Thwala was last on the witness box in May. He returns to give an account of all he knows. He was, after all, in the same house in Vosloorus when robbers allegedly came in, demanded valuables, and ultimately fatally shot Senzo, putting a brilliant football career to an end, sadly.
