Tshireletso Makabe’s Journey from Delivery Driver to Graduate

Inspiring Tale of Determination and Community Support Illuminates the Path to Academic Success

In a remarkable story of resilience and community spirit, Tshireletso Donald Makabe, hailing from the small village of Silwerkrans in South Africa’s North West province, has graduated from the University of the Free State, achieving his dream against formidable odds. Makabe, who once envisioned a career as an air traffic controller, found his true passion for teaching while assisting friends with mathematics during his school years. His academic journey, however, was fraught with financial difficulties that necessitated a job as a food delivery driver for Mr D to support himself and his family.Tshireletso Makabe'S Journey From Delivery Driver To Graduate 2

Makabe’s dedication to his mother, who sacrificed immensely to see him succeed, was a driving force in his pursuit of education. He recalls, “She is my world and all that I have. I have to make it in life to help her have a better life.” His journey was not just a personal struggle but a testament to the power of determination and the support of his community.

On his graduation day, in a poignant display of solidarity, Makabe’s fellow delivery drivers from Mr D escorted him to the ceremony on their motorbikes, a gesture that underscored the deep bonds formed during his time as a delivery driver. This act of support was not just symbolic but deeply emotional for Makabe, who faced the added distress of his mother’s inability to attend due to illness.Tshireletso Makabe'S Journey From Delivery Driver To Graduate 3

The financial support for Makabe’s education came from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), but it was barely enough. During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the situation worsened when his mother lost her job. The financial strain was so severe that Makabe needed a side hustle to afford basic necessities and transport for his school practicals.

Despite these hurdles, Makabe graduated at the end of 2023, with his graduation ceremony held on April 20, 2024. His story is not only about personal achievement but also highlights the challenges faced by students from disadvantaged backgrounds and the critical role of financial aid and community support in their educational journeys.Tshireletso Makabe'S Journey From Delivery Driver To Graduate 4
