His academic journey, however, was fraught with financial difficulties that necessitated a job as a food delivery driver for Mr D to support himself and his family.
Makabe’s dedication to his mother, who sacrificed immensely to see him succeed, was a driving force in his pursuit of education. He recalls, “She is my world and all that I have. I have to make it in life to help her have a better life.” His journey was not just a personal struggle but a testament to the power of determination and the support of his community.
On his graduation day, in a poignant display of solidarity, Makabe’s fellow delivery drivers from Mr D escorted him to the ceremony on their motorbikes, a gesture that underscored the deep bonds formed during his time as a delivery driver. Despite these hurdles, Makabe graduated at the end of 2023, with his graduation ceremony held on April 20, 2024.
