Pravin Gordhan Set To Retire From Politics

Pravin Gordhan has announced plans to retire from the political scene.

The Department of Public Enterprise has announced that Pravin Gordhan will soon retire from the political scene. In a shared statement, they said,

“The Department of Public Enterprise (DPE) can confirm that Minister Pravin Gordhan has expressed his intention to retire from active politics when the term of the current administration comes to an end following the elections.”

“Minister Gordhan thanks the Acting Director-General and staff of DPE; the boards and management and employees of the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and all other stakeholders for their collaboration and contribution to reforming and rebuilding the SOEs.”

Reuters reported on Friday, 8 March, that the South African Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, will retire after this year’s general elections on May 29.

The publication also writes that “Gordhan oversees state entities including struggling power utility Eskom and logistics firm Transnet, whose poor performances have dragged down economic growth in Africa’s most industrialised economy.”

According to a report by The South African, Mzansi has been celebrating since the announcement was made. One X app user wrote, “He was never held accountable, arguably the most powerful politician in our lifetime.” Another called him “The biggest crook to set foot on this land.”
