Alleged Parliament Arsonist Zandile Mafe Confesses to Crime, Makes More Threats In Dramatic Court Appearance

It appears to be one week, one drama, in the ongoing trial of suspected parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe. I  clip currently making the rounds online, he had a wild outburst in which he admitted to setting fire to the building and even threatened to do it again.

Yesterday, Thursday, July 13, while appearing in court, he had an outburst, affirming he was the one who touched the parliament building. He also railed at the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA), which he described as a party of racists and murders.

In his dramatic appearance at the court, he also asked that the parliament be moved to Bloemfontein while hurling more threats.

Before his court appearance yesterday. He was remanded for weeks at Pollsmoor Prison, where he was said to be undergoing psychiatric evaluation. The court had asked that a psychiatrist analyse his mental state to determine if he is able to follow the case in court, as well as understand the gravity of the charges against him.

Mafe’s case is of great public interest, and many South Africans are curious as to what the outcome would be. While many expect a jail term for the offence to which he has already confessed, it is up to Judge Nathan Erasmus to determine Zandile Mafe’s fate.
