The Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius faced the spectre of a cyclone (Cyclone Freddy) on Monday, leading to the cancellation of flights and casting a pall of uncertainty among residents.
The AFP reported that as a result of the cyclone threats, banks, schools and even offices were shut and the streets were largely deserted, with public transport also halted. Life literally came to a standstill.
The prime minister of the island Pravind Jugnauth confirmed the situation on the ground when he noted that Cyclone Freddy is not only a very strong cyclone but also a direct threat. In an address to his people, the prime minister had asked them to take all necessary precautions, stay at home, and remain vigilant.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) has been updating the populace on what to expect and how to stay safe as well. It had, for instance, issued a Class 3 cyclone warning, as well as estimated that wind from the centre of Cyclone Freddy could reach around 280 kilometres.
