Load shedding is one of the sore points of the presidency of Cyril Ramaphosa and had even led to calls for his resignation at some point. Well, the president is still there even as things appeared to have worsened with power distribution in the Rainbow Nation.
From contending with stage six load shedding, South Africans now face the spectre of load shedding for the next two years. The country’s power utility Eskom recently made the announcement, letting the people know that there would be continuous load shedding for the next two years.
What’s more, Eskom had also gotten the approval of the regulator to increase the electricity tariff by almost 30 per cent. However, for whatever reason – perhaps the smouldering anger over load shedding – President Cyril Ramaphosa has asked the power utility to shelve the tariff increase at the moment.
During a recent press conference, Eskom board chairman Mpho Makwana had informed the public about potential load shedding while also informing that it would last for at least 24otential load shedding while also informing that it would last for at least 24 months as the power utility tries to fix South Africa’s energy shortage problem.
Only, South Africans are not smiling at all.
