IEB Matric Records Impressive Pass Rate

Each year, expectations are pretty high about what the outcome of matric would be. So when results are pretty impressive, people are bound to jubilate. Even political figures end up commenting about the success rate. Indeed, failure has few admirers.

Well, this year’s Independent Examinations Board matric candidates did pretty well that it made national news. The pass rate stood at an impressive 98.4%, with 89.32% achieving a bachelor’s pass.

What makes the pass rate especially memorable and impressive is that this cohort missed a lot as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which threw many industries in disarray and forced the government to shut the country temporarily.

Also, the year’s pass rate is slightly higher than that of last year, which stood at 98.39%. IEB CEO Anne Oberholzer confirmed the figures while going into details about the result of the current year and contrasting it with the previous.

Oberholzer also noted that more candidates wrote the exam this year thanks to the addition of new schools and the increase in the number of candidates taking the exam.

Well, it will be interesting to see what the coming year’s figure will be. If it should be higher, then South Africa may well be said to be on course educationally
