Maskandi musician Khuzani Mpungose’s song “Umjolo Lowo” has just been crowned as the song of the year by Ukhozi FM.
Towards the end of each year, Ukhozi FM, one of the popular radio stations in South Africa, makes a list of the top 10 songs that ignited the South African music space.
Out of those 10, one eventually emerges as the winner. Well, 2023 was Khuzani’s year, as he clinched the coveted win, invariably letting the world know that maskandi artists can do it, too.
The point is that maskandi artists rarely win the Song of the Year scudetto. A look through the list of past winners indicates that house and other genres of music are way ahead of maskandi in of winnings list.
Interestingly, while some South Africans feel that “Umjolo Lowo” was a worthy win because of the “impact” it made on the music scene on release, some felt that there were way stronger contenders who should have won.
Either way, a winner has been announced and the people have to deal with it. For Khuzani, it was a moment of triumph and one he would remember for a long time. Well, who in his position wouldn’t remember this hour of great triumph?
