Country music legend Naomi Judd, one half of the mother-daughter collective the Judds, died last Saturday in Nashville. She was 76.
It was a tragic end to a musical career spanning decades:She was to have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday. Death had other ideas, so she died a day before what would have been another career milestone.
Naomi’s daughter Ashley confirmed her passing in a tweet a day after the incident, on April 30. According to her, the cause of her mother’s death was “mental illness.” She noted that the family is shattered by the death of the matriarch. And while they loved their mother, it is gratifying to know that the public loved her as well.
Naomi and her daughter Wynonna were collectively known as the Judds and remain among the finest voices in country music in the United States.
The mother-daughter duo had rocked to fame with a song dubbed “Had a Dream (for the Heart).”
A year after that, they had released their first studio album titled “Why Not Me,” which was just as successful.
In the intervening years, the group had released several hits, including 14 No. 1 songs, and won Grammy awards, among others.
