Senzo Meyiwa: Documentary Explores His Murder, Kelly Khumalo, Longwe Twala Connection

Years after he was brutally murdered, Senzo Meyiwa’s death remains unsolved. And many South Africans are unhappy about that. Who killed Senzo Meyiwa?

A Netflix documentary, Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star, tried to find answers to the question and almost concluded that Longwe Twala had pulled the trigger and killed the former Bafana Bafana captain.

On the night of 26 October 2014, Senzo was visiting his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at her family home in Vosloorus when the incident took place.

Longwe Twala, the son of notable musician Chicco Twala, was at the house with others, including Senzo Meyiwa and Kelly’s sister Zandi. Longwe was Zandi’s boyfriend at the time. The two were said to be having issues at the time, with Longwe suspecting Zandi of cheating on him.

One theory is that robbers had broken into the place and shot. But then nothing was taken, including a BMW parked outside, even though the key to the vehicle was on the table when the “robbers” struck.

Another theory – which many appear to go with – is that Senzo had tried to defend Zandi during her argument with Longwe, and the latter had pulled out a pistol, fatally shooting him.

A key point for this argument for some is that Longwe had once claimed that he fled the “robbery” and couldn’t alert the neighbours because he left his phone in the house. Later, he’d changed the story, stating his phone was in his pocket.
