Three men have been arraigned in the disappearance and eventual murder of postgraduate student Hillary Gardee, daughter of EFF former secretary-general Gardee.
The suspects are Mkhatshwa, Philemon Lukhele and Mduduzi Nkala. They were charged with murder and conspiracy, kidnapping, rape, possession of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice.
One of them could be seen wearing a Uzzi T-shirt during their appearance in court. Some Africans quickly pointed at the brand name and referenced similar cases and trials.
According to them, a significant percentage of those who have been tried (and convicted) on similar charges had been recorded to have shown up in the Uzzi brand.
As far as some South Africans are concerned, it indicates the suspects are guilty and should be punished. See some comments.
But then, the la saws otherwise. Suspects are innocent until proven guilty. By the way, the state is opposing the suspects’ attempts to get bail.
Hillary Gardee had disappeared while shopping at SPAR in Nelspruit. A sum of R100k was offered for information leading to her return. But she was eventually found murdered days after her disappearance. Her family is yet to get over the tragedy, even as it appears justice is about to be served.
