Washington Post columnist slams Beyoncé in new article “SA blood diamonds aren’t a girl’s best friend”.
American singer and songwriter, Beyoncé Knowles has faced a lot of criticism following her recent campaign for Tiffany and Co., About Love. The 39 year old is pictured with husband, Jay-Z wearing the enormous 128-carat Tiffany diamond in the new advertising campaign.
It is revealed that Beyoncé is the first black woman to wear the famous yellow diamond. The precious Jewell was reportedly mined in South Africa in 1877. It was said to have been bought by Charles Tiffany 144 years ago after being dug out of a big hole in Kimberley.
The company stated that it reflects their “continued support towards underrepresented communities”. They pledged $2m for scholarships at historically black colleges and universities.
However, the Washington Post columnist, Karen Attiah said Beyonce’s decision to wear the diamond “elevates a painful symbol of colonialism” rather than celebrate Black liberation. A source linked to the singer says she had no idea about the Diamond’s history.
