The musicians and storyteller Zolani Mahola should know because that is the reality right now following her odyssey on Freshlyground.
Freshlyground is A South African band founded in Cape Town with Zolabi as one of the lead vocalists. The band’s genres oscillate among kwela, blues and jazz.
It’s been over two decades since the band was founded, making it one of the veteran bands in the Rainbow Nation. Beyond that, Zolani was one of the standout figures in the collective, which earned her a name from fans of the group.
Speaking about this reality recently, she pointed out that she had taken on the name people have given her. In other words, people can now call her the name and she wouldn’t take offence at the move.
A lot has changed since the ground was founded decades ago. And while it is no longer as visible as it used to be, it has already earned a spot in the world of South African music.
