Apple Music announces Mellow & Sleazy as its latest Isgubhu cover stars

Apple Music today announced DJ duo and Amapiano artists Mellow & Sleazy (real names Phemelo Sefanyetse and Olebogeng Kwanaite) as the next Isgubhu cover stars.

“We are honoured to be chosen for the cover of Apple Music’s Isgubhu playlist for May. We love making music that gets people moving and makes them almost become carefree. We hope everyone in Africa and the world enjoy it!” they tell Apple Music.

The release of their highly-anticipated second EP Midnight in Sunnyside (2022), available to stream on Apple Music in Spatial Audio, is an amalgamation of the Bacardi and Amapiano melodies that established the duo as a force to be reckoned with on their debut EP Kwa Kwa (2021). Spearheaded by the viral smash single “Chipi Ke Chipi”, Midnight In Sunnyside features an all-star line-up including Nkosazana Daughter, Young Stunna, M.J., Sizwe Alakine, the late Mpura Mpura and more.

To celebrate their feature as Apple Music’s Isgubhu cover stars, the duo have also created an exclusive Isgubhu playlist that’s reflective of SA’s thriving electronic scene. “This playlist features some of our favourite South African dance songs that keep everyone on their feet. We share these special songs with the rest of Africa, pushing Piano!”

Taking over Isgubhu By… for this month is Johannesburg-born eclectic soul beat-maker and producer, MOJVKI (real name Molemo Mojaki). With influences ranging from Gospel and Kwaito, to Latin Jazz and ‘90s R&B, MOJVKI creates soundscapes that incorporate Baile Funk, Batida and Amapiano atop a rhythmic hip hop base. MOJVKI has also been featured on Apple Music 1’s Soulection Radio.

“My selection demonstrates a variety of sonics that emulate what African dance and electronic music means to me. The African dance and electronic sound embodies a unique form of sonics with limitless boundaries of rhythm. It’s fascinating because there’s no set formula in creating music in this realm that’s why it will always continue to form new avenues in sound and evolve many more sub-genres,” he tells Apple Music.

Launched in early 2021, Isgubhu is the definitive home of African Dance and Electronic music on Apple Music and spotlights and elevates the work of African Electronic DJs, producers and creatives. Isgubhu, a Zulu word meaning beat and used to refer to a banging song, pays homage to an evergreen set of genres and the African artists who have played a pivotal role in shaping the Dance and Electronic scene across the world.

Isgubhu also houses a collection of playlists including Spotlight On – a focus on boutique labels like Soul Candi, House Afrika, Stay True Sounds and Uganda’s Hakuna Kulala & Nyege Nyege Tapes and Isgubhu Voices – a focus on the best Dance and Electronic tracks that feature vocals.
