MTN & Vodacom Talk Challenges of 5G Rollout

5G is more like a future poster boy for a global system of mobile communication. Almost every country out there is talking about 5G. In South Africa, though, the planned rollout for 5G is facing severe issues. 

5G promises greater speed and a bounty of other goodies that internet users love. But rolling out 5G on the 28GHz band will be challenging for South Africa, according to Jacqui O’Sullivan, MTN’s corporate affairs executive.

He noted that MTN had carried out some trials on the 28GHz band, which is not recognised as an international communication band in South Africa.

By the way, compared to other countries, South Africa has made the most progress on 5G technology. 

When 5G first popped into cyberspace, some social media users had peddled would claims regarding the spectrum, with some claiming it causes cancer and must never be used. With mass sensitisation, however, the furore had died down.

It remains to be seen how the Rainbow Nation will eventually join the league of those already operating on the 5G spectrum.
