A performance made for release week
On October 22, 2015, Neon Indian released a live performance video that treated the concert stage as more than a place to reproduce a record. The clip captured Alan Palomo and his band playing “The Glitzy Hive” at Manhattan’s Webster Hall during that year’s CMJ Music Marathon. Behind them, projected figures broke apart, multiplied and changed in response to the musicians’ movements. The official performance upload, published by the verified Alan Palomo / Neon Indian artist channel, identifies the presentation as a collaboration involving Microsoft technology and the New York creative agency Listen.
The timing was unusually precise. “The Glitzy Hive” had debuted on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 program on October 8, according to Pitchfork’s contemporary report, and its commercial single listing is dated October 9 on Apple Music. VEGA INTL. Night School, Neon Indian’s third studio album, followed on October 16. Six days later, the Webster Hall video gave the song a second introduction—this time as evidence of how Palomo’s increasingly elaborate studio music could be rebuilt as a physical show.
Contemporary reports agree on the essentials. Pitchfork and Under the Radar placed the filming at Webster Hall during CMJ, while an earlier tour notice identified the scheduled concert date as October 14. The performance therefore sits in a narrow release-week interval: two days before the album arrived and eight days before the finished video appeared.
Five sensors, five moving inputs
The installation used five Kinect sensors, each capturing a different member of the band. WIRED’s account explains that the dancing projections were generated in real time and that Listen designed the visual presentation. The official upload supplies the same technical outline, describing a system in which the sensors reacted to both music and movement. This was not simply a prerecorded film synchronized to the set; the players supplied live visual inputs whenever they shifted position, played or danced.
That difference is visible throughout the clip. Human outlines appear behind the band, but they rarely settle into stable portraits. Forms smear into bright vertical traces, duplicate across the screen or dissolve into fields of digital noise. At some moments the projection retains the recognizable posture of a performer; at others it reduces a body to a fluctuating contour. The screen keeps pointing back toward the people onstage even when it makes them nearly abstract.
A conventional tour visual can be timed to a song and repeated with little variation. This system introduced a controlled element of uncertainty. WIRED reported that the resulting images would differ at each stop, an important qualification: the technology supplied rules and a recognizable visual vocabulary, but not one immutable sequence. The performance could remain coherent from show to show while still bearing the marks of that night’s movement.
The setup also suited Neon Indian’s established interest in deliberately unstable electronic surfaces. Kinect was familiar as a consumer motion-control system, yet the Webster Hall presentation did not hide the roughness of its translation. The bodies on the screen jitter, fragment and lose detail. Rather than suggesting a flawless virtual substitute for the musicians, those imperfections keep the conversion process perceptible: a person moves, a sensor registers that movement, and the projection returns an altered version to the room.
Why “The Glitzy Hive” fits the system
“The Glitzy Hive” was a canny choice for the demonstration because the song already sounds densely inhabited. Its rhythm section pushes steadily toward the dance floor, while clipped guitar, keyboards, percussion and layered voices fill the spaces around the beat. Okayplayer’s release-day assessment singled out its synth-bass, driving drums and mid-song four-on-the-floor turn. The live visuals extend that sense of bustle: one performer can become several figures, and a single gesture can leave a temporary crowd of electronic traces.
The track also represented the broader change of scale on VEGA INTL. Night School. In his contemporary Pitchfork review, Ian Cohen described a 51-minute record presented as a double album, linked by interstitial passages and filled with pitch-shifting, 16-bit synthesizer colors and samples. The production was more expansive than the project’s earlier work, but its abundance did not erase Palomo’s taste for queasy textures. The Webster Hall graphics translate that combination into stage language: bright, immediate and danceable, yet continually warped around the edges.
The album’s historical references were similarly broad. Pitchfork framed it around the cross-pollination of an early-1980s club culture in which synth-pop, disco, funk, R&B and early hip-hop could feed into one another. “The Glitzy Hive” makes that argument compactly. It reaches for pop pleasure without sanding away the odd details—the unstable vocal treatment, sudden textural shifts and sounds that seem to flicker in and out of focus.
That balance is central to the video. A purely polished light show might have reinforced only the song’s glamour; an aggressively chaotic one could have fought its groove. Listen’s imagery does both jobs. The projection gives the stage scale and color while preserving enough visual noise to keep the performance from feeling sealed or automatic. Its distortions belong to the same world as the record’s deliberate sonic disorientation.
Turning studio density into a band performance
Electronic records often create a practical challenge onstage: sounds accumulated through overdubbing, sampling and editing must be redistributed among a finite number of performers. The Webster Hall clip does not pretend that the studio and concert versions are identical. Instead, it makes the labor of translation part of the spectacle. Musicians remain plainly visible at their instruments while the screen extracts a second, more unstable performance from their bodies.
That relationship gives the footage more substance than a technology demonstration. The sensors do not replace the band or create an unrelated attraction beside it. They emphasize the players’ physical presence. A turn of the shoulders, a step across the stage or the repeated motion of playing an instrument becomes material for another layer of the arrangement. The screen effectively behaves like an additional responsive instrument, though its output is visual rather than musical.
The touring context mattered. The official upload said the collaboration was intended for selected performances as Neon Indian continued across the United States. Under the Radar’s October 22 coverage listed imminent dates in Columbus, Buffalo, Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, Saxapahaw, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Northern Transmissions published the same central production details and itinerary. What debuted at CMJ was therefore presented as a transportable live identity, not an effect created solely for one camera shoot.
A document of Neon Indian in transition
The performance preserves a specific point in Neon Indian’s development. Palomo was still readily associated with the hazier electronic pop surrounding the project’s 2009 debut, Psychic Chasms, but VEGA INTL. Night School pursued a fuller and more extroverted sound. Its club references, longer running time and continuous transitions called for a stage production capable of suggesting an environment rather than merely illustrating individual songs.
At Webster Hall, that environment remained anchored to human action. The technology did not make the concert virtual; it made the performers’ presence harder to ignore. Their transformed doubles only existed because the musicians were moving in the room at that moment. Even when a projected figure became unreadable as a face or body, its instability testified to a live source.
That is the lasting value of “The Glitzy Hive” footage. It records Neon Indian refusing two easy versions of the electronic concert: faithful playback on one side and detached visual spectacle on the other. The band played the song, the sensors watched the band, and the projections returned their movements in altered form. For a few release-week minutes at CMJ, the stage became a feedback loop—and the moving image could not exist without the performance inside it.
