Bonginkosi Mahlangu, professionally known as Kid X, is a South African Hip Hop artist and television personality. He is known for the songs “Ntan ‘Omuntu,” “Aunty,” “Caracara” with K.O, and more. He is recognized as one of the most talented rappers in South Africa and has amassed a good following with his music.

He is a multiple SAMA winner and is multi-lingual. Kid X is also the host of the show “The Hanger,” which airs on Trace Urban. It is a podcast-style show that showcases artists’ journeys. The show features rising stars in the amapiano scene, DJs and Hip Hop stars, and Afro-soul singers.

Kid X was born in Middleburg, South Africa, on 13 October 1988. He grew up in Cullinan, Pretoria. Kid X celebrated his 34th birthday on October 13, 2022. Kid X has stated that he lived most of his life before age 10. He explained that he was very mischievous and loved experimenting before turning ten, after which he turned a new leaf.

Kid X grew up with his family in Cullinan, Pretoria. He was born to parents Florence Baphelile and Sam Mahlangu and was mentored by Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu and Maskandi’s Shwi Nomtekhala. He often wishes his mom a happy Mother’s Day on social media. He once posted a photo of them on social media with the message, “A single day in a calendar year is never enough to celebrate your greatness. I love you.”

Kid X dreamed of playing football in the English Premier League – for Arsenal. His family moved to the Free State from Pretoria, and football was not offered as an extramural at his school. This led him to find other ways to occupy his time, helping him to grow a passion for becoming an emcee.

Wife

Kid X is married to South African model Duduzile Chilli. They announced their marriage on social media in March 2020. He wrote, “Changing your last name MAHLANGU.”

In a statement to SowetanLIVE, he said, “My wife Duduzile Chilli is amazing. Marriage life is sharing yourself and all that happens with your partner, and somehow you both start to mirror each other with almost everything. If one looks at marriage as an opportunity to grow, then it will be a thrilling and fulfilling journey.

Both Dudu and I are approaching our marriage our way and doing it as best as we can.”

Kid X was formerly part of AB Crazy. He has stated that he has loved Kwaito his entire life, but he fell in love with Hip Hop when he listened to Eminem’s biopic 8 Mile. Kid X was previously signed to Cassper Nyovest’s Cash Time Records. He was adviced by his friend Smashes to sign with them, but he left the label in 2014.

He once stated that he charged R10 000 for a feature. RedBull described him in 2017 as being “jokingly critical of himself.” His contributions to Skhanda music have helped win him a good following across South Africa. He characterizes the sub-genre as “tailor-made to the Nguni languages of Mzansi.”

Kid X is also known for his multi-lingual delivery in his music. He raps in five different local languages. Kid X has released three studio albums, including “3 Quarter Pace” (2015), “Thank Da King” (2018), and “Father Of Zen” (2021).

He said about his successful career, “The highlight of my career has to be getting into the game, which is something that’s never guaranteed. I’ve managed to solidify my name in this space that even though I may have stepped away for a short while, that spot is still there for me.”
